Nusa Penida is the island that Bali keeps to itself — a rugged, untouched outcrop of limestone cliffs, hidden sea caves and crystalline bays that sits just across the Badung Strait from Bali's southern coast. Until recently known only to divers and the most intrepid travellers, it has emerged as one of Southeast Asia's most breathtaking destinations, yet it has somehow managed to retain a raw, unspoiled character that Bali's mainland lost long ago.

The island's defining image is Kelingking Beach — a T-Rex-shaped cliff jutting into teal water, with a sliver of white sand at its base accessible only to those willing to descend a vertiginous jungle path. Then there is Angel's Billabong, a natural infinity pool carved into the cliff edge where waves crash in from the open ocean, and Broken Beach, an archway of rock framing a perfect circular cove. Below the water, Manta Point is home to enormous manta rays that glide effortlessly through the current.
